Gordon Derbyshire is a Canadian artist from British Columbia.  He was born in the west Kootenay town of Trail in 1961. His first years were spent in the mining town of Riondel but at the age of nine his family moved to Westbank in the Okanagan Valley. His interest in painting started as a young man. His formal training came in the form of private art lessons from the ages 13 to16. He also attended Okanagan Summer School of the Arts workshops after high school.
The process of creating art itself has been a lifelong education.
His work reflects his unique vision developed during decades of drawing and painting. Growing up in the “west” with its Native and pioneer history complete with ghost towns and western culture has influenced the subjects that Gordon paints, the rugged mountains and shorelines, beautiful valleys, ranch lands and desolate prairies along with the inhabitants both past and present.

He has also worked at his “day job” completing over one hundred illustrations per year for 2-1/2 decades.

“The essence of a scene and the mood that is created from the light is what I try to capture in my paintings. It might be at a location that I have recently visited or in a story from another time and place that I have read about and imagined. My conscious effort is to put down in brush strokes, only what is essential. The painters, N.C. Wyeth, Carl Rungius, Howard Terpning and of course the Group of Seven, have been most influential.
I hope my paintings can inspire people as much as these artists have inspired me”.
